Heated Debate. Proceed with Caution. Sterilization for children with disabilities? What do you think?

I have a daughter who has disabilities due to a condition that has prevented her brain from growing properly. Recently. in a support group, the issue of sex and puberty came up, and escalated into a debate about sterilizing children with disabilities. Some families say they plan to have their sons vasectomized or their daughter's tubal ligated or given hysterectomies as soon as legally possible, while others state they won't because these children, although developmentally and mentally fragile, should still have the right to choose what is done with their own body.

I, honestly and personally don't know where I stand on the issue. While it would be convenient for myself and my husband not to have to worry about pregnancy and/or changing her pads while she's on her period, I also think the other group is right about having rights to your own body. I know I wouldn't want anyone forcing me to have a ligation or hysterectomy.

Where do you stand on the issue? If your child had a developmental or mental disorder, that affected cognition, reasoning and basic functions of life, to the point where they would developmentally be a child for the rest of their lives, would you go to route of sterilixation or not? Why or why not?

Do you believe that disabled children should be sterilized, whether the condition from which they suffer is congenital/hereditary or not?

I guess it would depend. Would this person be having sex in the future? If so, would they be stable enough to raise a child?
